McCandless Project
For my McCandless project I decided to walk a different way to class. I also did not tell my friends that I usually walk to class with about what I was doing. First period I was talking to my friend as the bell rung and when leaving the class I turned a different way, my friend called me and said something like what are you doing and gave me a weird look. It was hard for me to not tell her what I was doing because I didn’t want to hurt her feelings but I kept my mouth shut. Second period wasn’t any better, this time I had two friends that I usually walk with to my next class. I had just met them this year and we were just becoming friends so it was even worse. I didn’t want them to be like what is she doing, is she going the long way just to ignore us. I was so close to just walking with them and then just walking a different way for the rest of my classes. The rest of the day every time I walked the way I “wasn’t suppose to” people gave me weird looks. I would have never thought that something as simple as that would cause a reaction out of people. I usually find myself just conforming to society. Just doing what everybody else does to eliminate the risk of embarrassment. This project made me look at Chris in a new way. From what I’ve read it doesn’t sound like that kind of stuff scares Chris and I really admire that. Sometime I do wish I had the confidence Chris does. The confidence to be myself and not being scared about what people are going to say or what they will think about me. In high school it’s really hard. People always say oh ya I don’t care what people say about me but really they do. Everyone does and it just makes everything hard. Like I said before it’s crazy what people will react over. Like everything has to be a certain way and if it’s not people will react. High school is a really fragile place. Mess with the balance of things and people will freak. That’s why I think Chris is really admirable he knew people would talk but he didn’t care. He didn’t stick to the “social norms” which i think is really cool because it would be so hard. I really liked this project because it showed me a lot and it was also just a fun experiment
